Knowing exactly how much wax your candle container holds is one of the most important steps in developing a consistent candle recipe. Different jars, tins, and vessels all hold different amounts of wax depending on their diameter and height. This jar fill calculator helps candle makers determine the correct wax fill weight so fragrance load and wick testing can be calculated accurately. Whether you are testing new vessels or scaling a candle recipe, understanding your jar fill weight ensures reliable and repeatable candle production.

Vessel volume is the manufacturer's fluid-ounce rating, which reflects melted capacity. Calculator accounts for ~10% volume contraction as wax cools to solid. Always verify against your supplier's spec sheet — densities are working averages.
Jar sizing gets confusing because vessels are often sold by fluid ounces, while candle formulas are built by weight. An 8 fluid ounce jar does not mean you should pour 8 ounces of wax by weight into it.
Wax is less dense than water, and a finished candle also needs headspace at the top of the container. That space helps with lid fit, wick trimming, and a cleaner burn experience.
As a rough planning shortcut, many candle makers use a density factor around 0.86 for wax-to-fluid-ounce conversion, then adjust based on the actual wax, vessel shape, fragrance load, and desired headspace.
Filling a candle all the way to the top can create messy and inconsistent results. Leave enough headspace for the wick, lid, labeling tolerance, and the melt pool that forms during burning.
The calculator gives you a strong starting estimate, but vessel dimensions, glass thickness, wax blend, and fragrance load can all change the final pour. For production, confirm your fill weight with a real test pour and record the result as your working formula.
