How wax conversion works

Wax is sold by weight but poured into vessels measured by volume, and the two do not line up because wax is less dense than water. A jar marked 8 fluid ounces does not hold 8 ounces of wax by weight. Most container waxes have a specific gravity around 0.86 to 0.92, which means a fluid ounce of melted wax weighs roughly 0.86 to 0.92 ounces on the scale. This calculator does that conversion in both directions so you can move between what the supplier sells you and what your vessels actually hold.

The math behind it

Wax weight = volume × specific gravity
Volume = wax weight ÷ specific gravity

The calculator carries the density value for common wax types so you do not have to look it up, and it handles ounces, grams, pounds, and milliliters so a European recipe in grams translates cleanly to a US supplier selling by the pound.

A worked example

Say you are filling twelve vessels that each hold 7 fluid ounces of usable space, using a soy container wax with a specific gravity of 0.90. Each vessel takes 7 times 0.90, which is 6.3 ounces of wax by weight. Twelve vessels need 75.6 ounces, or about 4.7 pounds. Add your normal overage for pour loss and the residue left in the pitcher, typically 5 to 10 percent, and you know to melt around 5 pounds. Without the conversion, ordering "12 times 7 ounces equals 84 ounces" would leave you buying more than you need every single time, and those errors compound across a year of batches.

Common questions

Does fragrance oil change the numbers?

Slightly. Fragrance oil is a bit denser than wax, so a finished blend at a 9 percent load is marginally denser than wax alone. For batch planning the difference is small enough to ignore; for precise vessel fill lines, run your figures through the jar fill calculator, which accounts for the full blend.

Why does my actual fill differ from the calculation?

Usable vessel volume is less than the advertised size because you fill to a headspace line, not the brim. Measure your real fill height with water on a scale once, and use that number going forward.
